Senior Outing at Horsethief Reservoir Y Camp!
August 22-25, 2016 (Monday afternoon to Thursday Morning)
Although this outing is not formally affiliated with the Summer Y Resident Camp for youth and families, the YWCA has made the Y Camp available, with trained Y camp staff, for active older adults who are looking for a fun camp experience and wish to go on their own. Most of us have contributed to the United Fund which supports Y participation for kids and families, and this is your chance to see and experience some of the benefits of your contributions!!!! (Plus $20 of your fee will be donated to send needy kids to camp!) Did you go to camp when you were a kid? Did your kids go to camp when they were growing up? Or have you ever wondered how much fun it would be to experience going-to-camp yourself? Hey!!! This is your opportunity to participate in the Senior Outing to YMCA Camp at Horsethief Reservoir!
There is room for 35 or more active seniors who would like a camp adventure! Accommodations will be in cabins (max 7 campers; men’s, women’s; sorry, no co-ed!) with electric plug-ins, bathroom/showers, and everyone will have a lower bunk! You won’t have to wander outside if you get up at night! And a “plus”! You do not have to be a “senior” or a member of the Y to go on this outing!
Activities At Camp: Monday: Please arrive at camp between 3:45pm-6pm. Check in, get settled, look around! Dinner will be available from 6pm to 7pm (all meals will be cafeteria style); You are on your own until 8pm when we will have a campfire orientation, a schedule update, a brief safety session, and campfire activities, including s’mores!
Tuesday: 6:45am: Sleep in, or, for early-rising folks, greet the day with an early stretch, stroll and paddle! Those who wish will work up an appetite by canoeing or kayaking across the early morning calm of the lake! (Wow!) 8-9am: Breakfast. 10-11am: Archery and/or BB gun shooting; 11am-Noon: the Zip Line will be open; 12:30-1:30pm Lunch. Afternoon: Waterfront (swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding will be available)—and/ or bring your gear and go fishing anytime! We will have a lifeguard and you must be able to swim in order to use the water equipment! Afternoon: Bean Bag Toss; Line Dancing, or just relax, nap, read! 5:30-6:30pm: Dinner. 7:30pm: Nature Walk. PLUS-A New Activity! PICKLEBALL!!! (Available all day) Remember, all activities are optional—do not over-extend yourself. Just have fun!
Wednesday: 6:45am Sleep in, or partake of an early stretch, morning walk through the forest or early canoeing!—then a repeat of Tuesday’s activities and schedule—Do the same or pick something different! Also, we will have a very special evening campfire.
Thursday: 6:45am: Sleep in, or greet the day with an early stretch, stroll and paddle! A repeat of our early Tuesday morning canoe/kayak activity! We will have breakfast (8:00-9:00am), then pack up, say our goodbyes, and depart by 10am!
Transportation will be on your own. Horsethief Reservoir is located near Warm Lake north and east of Cascade, in a quiet and beautiful mountain setting. The landscape character of the camp is rolling coniferous forest with semi-open areas of brush, meadows and wetlands. Elevations range between 5,146 and 5,364 feet above sea level. There are nearby mountain ranges and peaks of higher elevation that provide the site with tremendous off-site views. The camp facilities are newer (since 2010) and extraordinary! Directions To Camp: From Boise/Eagle take highway 55 north to Cascade. Once you have passed through Cascade, turn right on Warm Lake Road. Proceed 6 miles, then turn right on Horsethief Road. Proceed 3 miles to the west side of the reservoir-do not turn off Horsethief Road. The camp property is located at the south end of the reservoir. Just before the gate to the camp, you will cross a spillway with a small amount of water running over the road most times of the year. It is safe for most all cars to proceed through the spillway, and you will enter the camp shortly.
Medical: Be advised that medical facilities and services are not available at camp, but are available in Cascade. Although a Y Member (Carol Purcell) is coordinating this outing, each camper is an independent participant and is responsible for themselves, their participation and transportation. Bring your meds and make wise choices!
Cost: The full cost for lodging, camp staff, meals and all activities is $165 per person. What a bargain! To maintain our camp reservation, a completed registration form and a deposit of $35 from each participant is due upon application and the balance of $130 is due prior to June 15, 2015. Payment should be in the form of a check payable to the Treasure Valley YMCA, with a notation this payment is for the Senior Outing/Horsethief Res., 8/22-25, 2016.
